When I tell people I’m from Newfound-land, I’m invariably met with bemused smirks. A lot of people feel they know a lot about the place, but few know of a place called Dildo and even fewer understand that this is actually the name of a small community in Newfound-land. Being the curious person I am, I thought, why don’t I move to Dildo myself and explore the truth behind the funny name?
I did some research on Dildo and found out it’s thought to have gotten its name from a Portuguese term ‘del dall’, which means a long, pointed table. The historic homes of the waterfront town match up perfectly with this thought process. And so it was decided…I would move to Dildo, Newfound-land!
When I told friends and family of my impending move, I got a mix of reactions. Some thought I was crazy and others simply laughed. Truthfully, I was a bit apprehensive myself as I had no idea of what I should expect. But, despite the fear, I was still excited!
As the night before my big move descended upon me, excitement and fear wrestled to the forefront of my mind. I was finally going to see what Dildo was really like! In the morning, I packed my things and kissed my family goodbye. I was off!
The six-hour drive to Dildo was filled with mixed emotions. But, most of all, it was filled with exciting anticipation. When I finally arrived in Dildo, I saw hilly landscape dotted with plenty of trees. The town was quaint and friendly people were everywhere. It was nothing like I had imagined – better, in fact!
Once I got settled in my house, I started to explore. One thing that stood out to me was how family-oriented the community was. From the businesses to the local hangout spots, it was clear that Dildo’s residents all cared deeply for one another.
The people of Dildo were also very passionate about fishing and spent their days either fishing off the coast or maintaining the various fishing trawlers. The peaceful sound of waves lapping against the coast of Dildo was a constant reminder of its historic fishing roots and its importance to the community.
On top of fishing, Dildo was also a hub of activity for other activities, including kayaking, sailing, and wildlife watching. Even though the town may not be as well-known as other Newfound-land towns, its people still know how to have a good time and enjoy life.
Everyone in Dildo also took pride in their little community. It was obvious even in the way the town was maintained, there was always someone out tending to their lawns, planting colourful flowers or trimming the hedges. No matter what day of the week it was, it was always a good time in Dildo.
To answer the initial question: Yes, anyone can move to Dildo, Newfound-land! If you’re looking for a place with charm and character, where friendly people come together and help one another, this is the place to be. The maritime atmosphere of the town is strong and its rich history is an integral part of what makes Dildo so special.
After living in Dildo for a few months, I can honestly say that I’m glad I took a chance and moved to this special community. I have felt incredibly welcomed by the people here and I look forward to seeing what the future holds in store for me in this little gem of a town. Who knows, you could be the next one to call it “home”!
Going back further, I learned that the presence of Indigenous peoples has been part of Dildo’s history for centuries. The Mi’kmaq, Beothuk and the Innu have lived and continue to live in Dildo, and dildos are part of the fabric of this unique, vibrant town. From art to language classes, the Indigenous peoples of the area have so much to offer!
The town also has an incredibly rich cultural landscape with a range of events and activities for everyone. The Dildo Music Festival is an annual event that celebrates Newfoundland’s music scene, and the Dildo Art Gallery showcases talented artists and their work. There’s no shortage of things to do in Dildo!
While Dildo is known for its quirky name, the locals have embraced it with pride and a sense of humour. From the various souvenirs that celebrate the quirky name, to all the fun activities the town offers, it’s easy to see the level of hometown pride people have for this unique little hamlet.
This town has so much to offer for everyone, from young entrepreneurs looking for a chance to start a business, to retirees looking for a quiet place to call home. Dildo offers a bit of something for everyone, and it doesn’t take long for visitors to see why they should make it their home.
